About “brain tumor treatment”misunderstanding

Dr. Fukushima takes on the challenge of glioma surgery (YouTube)

Dr. Fukushima is said to be a genius brain surgeon, and his genius surgeries have been shown many times on TV programs.

His influence was enormous, and countless families of patients have had the experience of being told by those around them to contact Dr. Fukushima when they hear of ``brain tumors.''

In this video episode, we are told that he is attempting surgery for glioma. It's a wonderful technique, and I'm really grateful for the patients and their families who survived.

However, as you can see in the MRI image in the video, the disease in this case is a relatively benign tumor that occurs in clusters like a boil outside of the brainstem, rather than inside the brainstem, which is the theme of this site. It does not occur "inside" the part of the brainstem called the pons. Therefore, surgical removal is possible.

Pediatric brainstem gliomas are diffuse malignant tumors that cling to and infiltrate the nerves inside the brainstem, making them impossible to remove, so neurosurgeons are rarely involved. The only surgical treatment is for hydrocephalus, where the flow of cerebrospinal fluid around the brain is blocked by a tumor, putting pressure on the brain.

Team medical care is important not only for this disease but also for cancer, especially brain tumors. There are only a limited number of cases where a genius surgeon's surgery can solve everything. In addition to neurosurgeons, internists, nurses, radiologic technologists, psychological counselors, palliative care teams, pharmacists, nutritionists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, medical social workers, etc. form teams depending on the patient's condition and treat each patient. We will provide treatment for.

Among cancers, brain tumors have a strong authority over neurosurgeons, and there is a history in which not only surgery but also chemotherapy has been carried out under the medical instructions of neurosurgeons. Chemotherapy is a medical procedure that requires a high level of knowledge and expertise, and should be performed by a trained internist, but there have been cases where neurosurgeons have intervened and medical accidents have occurred due to a lack of knowledge. . This is not possible in other developed countries where occupational segregation is possible.

I think that Dr. Fukushima is a great neurosurgeon, but even after that surgery, many patients still have a long battle ahead of them, including rehabilitation, and depending on the disease, recurrence and aftereffects. I don't think the show is reporting it accurately.
